CostScope: project profitability for freelancers, studios and companies
How it works
Whether you are one or fifty: three steps to your margin.
Click a step to see it in the app below.
Track your time
Stopwatch, from–to range or weekly timesheet. The rate is added to the hours automatically.
Assign costs and revenue
Allocate ledger entries to projects and cost centres.
See margin and profit
For every project and the whole company. As you go, not after invoicing.
Time
One line, not a form.
Description, project, billable, time and start. The timer runs right away, or you enter a from–to range and see the duration before you save. A weekly timesheet for those who log time afterwards.
- Project picker with search, grouped by client
- New project or task straight from the tracker
- The rate is applied to the hours automatically
Projects
Keep an eye on the budget as you go, not after invoicing.
Every project shows costs incurred, margin, invoiced amount and unbilled hours. A daily chart shows cumulative cost against the budget. Sub-projects add up to the whole engagement.
Service contracts and infrastructure have their own view: revenue for the period, server capacity utilisation, hosting margin.
Finance
A profit breakdown that adds up to the cent.
Costs and revenue go into one ledger and are allocated to projects. The company overview builds project margins, other income and overhead from them. Paid time not worked and unsold server capacity get a line of their own.
Reports
Profitability by project, person or cost centre.
Switch between costs from the tracker and from payroll, between the accrual and the cash view. Analytical dimensions such as cost centres are assigned once and fill in by themselves. Export to CSV, XLSX and PDF.
Team and permissions
Colleagues see their own hours. Money is seen by those who should.
The owner, manager and member roles, or your own roles built from fifteen permissions. Visibility of hours and tasks is set on each project. One account can belong to several companies.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is CostScope suitable for a freelancer?
Yes. A company in CostScope can have a single member. The tracker, projects, ledger and reports work the same way.
Do team members see money?
Only if their role includes the money.view permission. Without it, a member sees their own hours and amounts are not shown at all, not even masked.
Can one person work for several companies?
Yes. One account can be a member of several companies, and you switch between them in the app header.
How is the project margin calculated?
Invoiced amount minus costs incurred. Costs are the hours worked at their rate plus ledger entries allocated to the project.
Which currencies does CostScope support?
You set the default currency in the company. Entries can also be in a foreign currency, exchange rates are loaded automatically.
Can I get my data out?
You can export every report to CSV, XLSX or PDF.
